The new year is here to stay and it’s time for resolutions. Staying healthy is one of the best goals you can set for yourself in 2014. Treat your body as a temple and enjoy everything else around you for years to come. Try five habits to keep you healthy this year and in the future.

Habit Number One: Get Out in the Fresh Air and Sunshine

It’s important to get your fill of the great outdoors. According to the US National Library of Medicine, sunlight can do much more than simply brighten your day.Take care with sunscreen to avoid the damaging effects of UV rays so that you can reap the many benefits that come with your daily dose of sunshine. Sunlight promotes the production of vitamin D in your body. This vitamin is vital for optimal functioning of many systems. It’s believed to be instrumental in the functioning of your immune system, neuromuscular functioning, and the metabolism of calcium. Get out and soak up a little sun. Walk the dog or take a stroll around the block on your lunch break. Play with your kids after work. Not only will it benefit your body, you’ll feel more upbeat as well.

Habit Number Two: Drink Your Water

You need to stay hydrated. Drink eight to ten glasses of water a day. You’ll assist your metabolism and flush toxins out of your body. Drinking water also keeps down the calories and provides a sensation of fullness. It will help you to maintain a healthy body weight. If need be, start small. Try swapping out one drink a day with a glass of water. Keep a jug in your fridge. You’ll find that ice water is very refreshing and you’ll burn more calories as your body has to work harder to warm up.

Habit Number Three: Eat Your Fruits and Vegetables

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention agrees with your mother when it comes to your fruits and vegetables.Shoot for two cups of fruits and two cups of vegetables each day. Fruits and vegetables contain essential minerals and vitamins, providing your body with the right kind of fuel. You’ll also receive the benefits of antioxidants that fight free radicals in your body, reducing your risk of developing cancer. In addition, fruits and vegetables will help you to manage your weight.

    Habit Number Four: Get Active

You need to remain physically active. Aim for a half hour a day. An hour is even better. You don’t have to do something strenuous. Go for a walk every day or ride a bike. Try hiking. Take a trip to the YMCA and go for a swim. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Park your car a long way from the office. Change it up and keep moving, maintaining flexibility and strength.

Habit Number Five: Get Your Beauty Sleep

You need to get adequate rest every night. Seven to eight hours is a good rule of thumb. This is your body’s chance to recharge and rejuvenate. You will be able to avoid health problems by sleeping well.

Hard habits are hard to break. Turn that statement around with good habits in 2014. Make practical choices each day that will treat your body well.
