• Acne Treatments (Part II): Vitamins and Spa

Powerful medicated solutions formulated to stop acne can be even more effective when incorporated in products with various other beneficial elements like botanicals, vitamins, exfoliators. Vitamins, as mentioned in a previous article on our blog, significantly contribute to the overall results of acne medication with their antioxidant and healing qualities.

    1. Vitamin C reduces post-acne marks.
    2. Vitamin C and E provide sufficient hydration for sensitive skin, maintaining elasticity.
    3. Vitamins A, C, and E are antioxidants that fight free-radicals’ damage in your body and within your skin layers.
    4. Vitamin B improves blood circulation, aiding in the skin’s healing process.
    5. Zinc is efficient in stimulating collagen production, shielding against infection, reducing swelling, and boosting the effects of vitamins A and E.

Alternatively, various spa treatments and solutions are available in order to improve the condition of skin and help treat acne:

Microdermabrasion refines the texture of skin and stimulates both collagen and elastin production to help reverse the signs of aging. This is a peeling process that involves granular sodium bicarbonate or aluminum bicarbonate crystals that remove the surface layers of skin. It has been proven to effectively reduce the appearance of mild to moderate scars, stretch marks, sun damage and age spots/skin discoloration. For deep scars, regular dermabrasion is recommended. The procedure is quite expensive and it may require multiple treatment sessions depending on the targeted results. Skin may appear red during the healing process.

Blue Light Therapy involves  high-intensity blue light treatment and is used to treat acne blemishes by killing bacteria and reducing inflammation. This procedure does not use ultraviolet light, while other forms of light therapy may include UV rays. The therapy usually involves short, multiple sessions. Side effects may include dryness, irritation and changes in pigmentation. While it is important to not overexpose yourself directly to the sun rays, it is equally important to get sufficient sunlight for the necessary vitamin D production, otherwise fatigue and irritability may occur as a result of the lack of exposure to sunlight.

Laser therapy is used to remove one layer at a time of surface skin with a carbon dioxide laser and/or erbium YAG laser. It is mostly used to reduce scars and marks on the skin (post acne marks included). Collagen production is stimulated by heat during this procedure and this tightens and smoothes skin to reduce the appearance of the scars. The results are not immediate and it takes almost a year to become visible. Laser skin resurfacing is most effective when combined with other acne scar treatments, such as surgery.
