• Caffeine and Acne Breakouts

Caffeine and Acne BreakoutsIf you’ve started a regular acne skin care regimen, you’ve probably also started to consider your diet options as well. And when you’re thinking about the foods that are good for your skin, caffeine is often talked about. Does it cause acne breakouts? Researchers have found that the answer isn’t simply yes or no. But they have found that caffeine can work against you acne skin care treatment. So what’s true about the link between acne and caffeine? Here are some facts.

Not All Research Studies on Caffeine and Acne are Trustworthy

Make sure you research thoroughly! Some of the studies on caffeine and acne were performed decades ago. These old studies are problematic according to current research because the studies used chocolate bars that contained imitation chocolate and no real dairy ingredients. Current studies have shown a link between cow’s milk and a high glycemic index to acne breakouts, but whether or not there’s a link between caffeine and facial acne or back acne hasn’t been established.

Can Cow’s Milk and a High Glycemic Index Cause Acne?

Research studies have shown this to be true. While it’s a separate issue from caffeine and acne, if you’re looking to minimize or avoid foods for your acne diet, consider foods that can be digested quickly and that release a large amount of glucose into the bloodstream (like baked potatoes and refined carbohydrates) no-nos. Why is that? Because when your blood sugar rises, so does your level of insulin, causing a growth hormone called IGF-1 to be produced. IGF-1 has been linked to acne breakouts in the past. Also, you want to avoid cow’s milk as well, as the presence of hormones in it has also been linked to acne breakouts.

Caffeine Can Contribute to Acne Breakouts

While there hasn’t been definitive research that links caffeine to acne breakouts, it’s been shown that caffeine can cause a few biological reactions that can work against the effects that you want from your acne treatment products. As a stimulant, caffeine can cause stress and anxiety. Your body reacts to stress when the adrenal gland works to produce androgen. Androgens have been linked to making your body over-produce skin cells that can clog pores that lead to acne breakouts. Also, the adrenal gland releases cortisol, triggering your sweat glands to produce oil, making your skin a prime target for bacteria that cause acne. The stimulant effects of caffeine can also affect your sleep patterns. If you’re not getting enough sleep, it can affect your overall health as well as the health of your skin.

Remember, caffeine may not cause acne directly, but it can still contribute to acne breakouts. Having too much caffeine in your diet can cause your body to react and lead to unhealthy skin and eventually acne breakouts. As with everything, moderation is key!
