• Makeup and Acne Treatment

We all know there are a number of factors at play when it comes to what causes acne breakouts (making it vital to find your own unique acne treatment plan). What you wear as your makeup can play an important role in how you keep your skin clear – or how often and severely your skin breaks out. For some women, breakouts might just be caused only by makeup alone (what dermatologists call “Acne Cosmetica”), so it may be time for a change of makeup to help prevent the number of breakouts that happen. So what can you do so that makeup is helping you get rid of acne instead of causing breakouts? Here are three things to consider when it comes to makeup and your acne treatment routine.

Make Sure You Target Your Acne-Prone Skin Properly with a Diagnosis

What kind of skin you have is going to require different kinds of treatments, so figuring it out takes a professional opinion. So if you aren’t sure if you have Acne Cosmetica or Acne Vulgaris, make sure you visit a dermatologist for a professional consultation. Once you know what condition your skin is in, you can more effectively treat it. If your acne is hormonal acne or the result of stress or a specific skin type, then, while good makeup practices are important, your acne treatment products, lifestyle choices and making sure that you have overall healthy skin are really the only things that will result in clear, acne-free skin for the long time. If you have Acne Cosmetica, then simply changing your makeup products or how you use makeup (or for that matter changing your skin care products) can make a significant difference. The key is to understand what role makeup is playing in causing your acne breakouts and then minimizing that role. A dermatologist can certainly help you, but if you suspect that your acne is due to Acne Cosmetica, then try going makeup free or switching to all-natural skin care products for a period of time to see if that improves your skin clarity.

Get the Right Kind of Makeup to Keep Your Skin Acne-Free

You get what you pay for, and this is especially true when it comes to makeup! Cheap makeup is usually loaded with harsh chemicals that will irritate your skin and mostly likely cause breakouts. Your best bet is to splurge a little on more natural makeup and avoid the mass-made drugstore brands if you can. Some prefer makeup that is made with acne-prone skin in mind, with primarily natural ingredients that are gentle on the skin and even some ingredients that are designed specifically to combat acne. For others, mineral makeup is the best solution. How do you know if specific makeup is good for your skin? Avoid pore-clogging ingredients like isopropyl, myristyl, or isostearyl. You’ll also want to test any makeup or skin care products that you purchase on a smaller patch of skin before applying them to your entire face. After all, if a skin care or makeup product is going to irritate your skin or cause blemishes, it’s certainly better to limit that to a small area at first before exposing your entire skin to it. Don’t fall into the trap of using thick or sticky makeup to cover up acne blemishes. What you may actually be doing is making your breakouts worse, and then you’ll just need to keep covering them up, and keep making them worse! If you’ve established that your makeup or skin care products are at the root of your acne problem, then it’s certainly time to make a change, even if that change results in the temporary exposure of your problematic skin.

Remove Your Makeup Every Night to Avoid New Breakouts

No matter what your skin care treatment regimen is, in order to have great skin all day and all night, your plan has to be consistent! Even if you’ve had a long day and just want to go straight to sleep, always make sure you remove your makeup and wash your face. Leaving even healthy makeup on your face overnight can lead to clogged pores. One great suggestion is to keep pre-moistened skin wipes near your bathroom or bedroom. Then, even if you are too tired to do your entire acne treatment plan at night, you’ll at least be able to get the makeup off of your face. Even if your acne breakouts aren’t directly related to the use of makeup, an overnight visit from your skin foundation will absolutely clog pores and result in a build-up of acne-causing bacteria.

Whether your acne is caused by makeup or nature, it’s important to make sure your acne treatment regimen includes wearing the right kind of makeup, practicing good makeup testing and always removing makeup in order to help prevent breakouts. Pay attention to the kinds of ingredients in your makeup so your skin will look healthy all year round.
