• Should Your Acne Treatment Contain Salicylic Acid?

Why Salicylic Acid is an Effective Acne TreatmentTrying to find the right kind of skin care products for your acne treatment plan can be a tricky business. Not only should you be looking for the right kind of acne treatment products for your skin type, but you should also be sure that you’re making sure you’re using products that combine the best of science with natural ingredients. In fact, you’ve probably seen products on the market that use ingredients like Benzoyl Peroxide or Salicylic Acid – or even both in the same product. You may have even seen that Benzoyl Peroxide is bad for your skin. But why should Benzoyl Peroxide be avoided while Salicylic Acid is beneficial to your skin?

Why is Benzoyl Peroxide Bad for Your Skin?

You may have noticed many acne treatment products that don’t contain Benzoyl Peroxide for a reason. Why? Because Benzoyl Peroxide is known to dry out your skin. When you’re combating acne, drying out your skin sounds like it would be a good thing, but in fact, dry skin can lead to irritation. That irritation can make your skin overcompensate for the dryness by producing more oil. The dead skin cells caused by the dryness combined with the excess oil can clog pores that lead to acne breakouts. Even worse, the irritation that’s caused by dead skin cells can cause redness and even more bumps on your skin. A few studies have also shown that Benzoyl Peroxide may create free radicals that can damage skin, and in some instances, increases sun damage. So why is Salicylic Acid in products to help you get rid of acne better for your skin?

Why Acne Products with Salicylic Acid are Better for Your Skin

There are a number of factors that go into why acne occurs, and oil is just one of the targets in combating acne, so drying out your skin alone isn’t going to prevent breakouts. Dead skin cells can also build up on your skin, combining with the oil to clog pores. Those clogged pores can cause blemish-causing bacteria on the skin to produce acne. Salicylic Acid, a beta hydroxy acid, acts as an exfoliant to clear away those dead skin cells (even the ones beneath the surface of the skin) and prevent them from clogging pores. Salicylic Acid also helps to remove dead skin cells from the pores themselves to leave skin clear. Unlike Benzoyl Peroxide, Salicylic Acid doesn’t dry your skin, but instead treats acne by clearing out pores effectively.

If you’ve found the right kind of acne treatment with Salicylic Acid, keep in mind that the results aren’t instant. Be patient! To effectively clear your skin and cleanse your pores, it could take up to four weeks to see the benefits. You’ll need to “purge” your skin all of the dead skin cells and bacteria, which may mean temporary breakouts. Over the long haul, however, Salicylic Acid is much more effective at keeping your skin clear over Benzoyl Peroxide, which will over dry your skin and lead to future breakouts.
