antioxidants and skincareEnvironmental aging has drawn more and more awareness and with it, the demand for free radicals scavengers in topical skincare products. Antioxidants prevent cell oxidation and are key to repairing the damage done by environmental factors like pollution and sun exposure over time . This damage can become visible on the skin as early as our 20s, as free radicals are almost impossible to avoid. Changes in skin tone and texture, fine lines, dullness, loss of elasticity, freckles and blotches are some of the common signs.
Whenever diet is mentioned as main solution to overall health and healthy skin, antioxidants are included among the best skin benefactors like water, fruit, fiber, fatty acids. Antioxidants have a very important role in preventing environmental aging and its signs by helping the skin restore health and protecting against damage. The most common antioxidants and some of the most efficient in topical products are Vitamin C and Pomegranate extract, both powerful and effective in fighting cellular damage. Vitamin C is an essential nutrient for the body, it supports the collagen production and helps repair tissues and maintain blood vessels .Pomegranate is a great source of antioxidant polyphenols that combat free radicals damage and help repair cells and heal wounds.
Other efficient antioxidants are Coenzyme Q10, Vitamin E, grape seed extract, green tea extract. These multi-purpose agents are able to disarm free radicals and reinforce the structural fibers of the skin, collagen and ellastin. These proteins, as previously mentioned on our blog, are the skin’s main structural support system and maintain our skin’s youthful resiliency. Some antioxidants (Vitamin E, Co Q10) have the unique quality of protecting the skin from sun damage by suppressing the production of the collagen-destroying enzyme, collagenase. Pomegranate extract is a sun screen enhancer and, used together with sun screen in topical products, considerably improves the power the Sun Protection Factor (SPF)

Antioxidants have a very important role in skin care, at any age. It is important to prevent the environmental damage before it shows its signs on our face. A nourished, hydrated and healthy skin is able to fight the elements and keep the youthful glow for a long time. As we are being subjected to free radicals action every day, we need to prevent and repair damage continuously; this continuity is key to keeping a younger body and a younger looking skin for a long time.
