    Environmental Skin Aging
    Forget the phrase “healthy tan” because tanning is far from being the equivalent of healthy skin. We now know that repeated exposure to the sun (UV Rays) and other environmental factors (extreme weather, pollution, stress) can take a serious toll on our skin. Sun exposure causes DNA damage and this affects the skin’s ability to repair itself. Regeneration is slower and aging signs become visible and more difficult to conceal. Over time, as the water content of the skin layer decreases, skin appears dry and brittle. Also referred to as extrinsic or external aging, environmental aging essentially accelerates the breakdown of collagen and ellastin which can lead to fine lines, freckles, roughness and more. Collagen and ellastin are the “elasticity” proteins from the connective tissue that bind water and prevent water loss from our skin.

    Genetic Skin Aging
    As its name suggests, genetic aging is based on our genetic makeup. If your mother and grandmother had beautiful skin throughout their lives, you’re most likely to have the same type of skin. Genetic aging is a continuous process that begins to reveal visible signs as early as our 20s. As we age, out skin’s production of collagen and ellastin begins to slow down and their role in supporting the skin’s firmness decreases. Skin‘s texture changes, it gradually loses density and elasticity.

    Hormonal Skin Aging
    Estrogen has an important effect on the body, we often forget how much it does for our skin. This essential hormone keeps skin soft, supple and firm by encouraging collagen production. Together with ellastin, collagen is responsible for the skin’s youthful resiliency.
    During the years leading up to menopause (late 20s to mid 40s) the body produces decreasing quantities of estrogen. The skin becomes more fragile and thin with deep wrinkles, and possible acne breakouts dues to hormonal changes. Changes in skin tone often appear and skin loses luminosity.
    During and after menopause, skin begins to lose significant amounts of collagen. Studies reveal that in the first five years after menopause, skin loses up to 30% of its collagen. Since the face has a high concentration of estrogen receptors, menopause may be most visible here – in the form of deep creases, dull tone and rough texture.
